On 24 February 2016 in Paris the first projects that were granted funding from Google’s Digital News Initiative Innovation Fund were announced: Out of 1200 applications, the project of Népszabadság Online combining user and editorial content, images, and texts was awarded the maximum amount of funding.
The American Internet giant announced in October last year that they would offer funding to innovation projects deemed worthy in the area of digital news services. Népszabadság Online (nol.hu) submitted an application for a total amount of fifty thousand Euros for a mobile application, and the global giant, famous for its search engine, granted the total amount of HUF 15.5 million. According to the winning project application, Nol.hu intends to provide a platform that users could use to submit live images, photos and text messages about current events, of which the editors could select suitable ones in real time, combine them with their own videos, and deliver them to the readers.
„For Népszabadság Online, which is about to be revamped from top to bottom, it is important to present events from every possible angle. The fact that we received funding for this plan from Google shows that we are on the right track”, says András Murányi, editor-in-chief of Népszabadság.
„Innovation is important for the publisher to ensure that our readers can access content we provide as quickly and as comfortably as possible, and for this reason we are happy to support the initiative of nol.hu”, stated András Pásztor, online development manager of Mediaworks.
